The path up to the Tom spur from the Highland Center along the A-Z trail is hard packed with very few blow-downs. It is a dream to hike. The spur itself has a few blow-downs, but is also well packed.
The Willey Range trail from the A-Z to Field is a torturous path through dense woods. We broke alot of branches along the way, but it is still a tight squeeze in places, it only follows the summer trail in a few places and is mostly a bushwhack.
From Field to Willey the path was completely unbroken since the last major snowstorm. I tried to follow my memory of the path, but got lost on the way out and ended up too low on the west side of the range. I corrected alot of the trail on the way back, so follow the tracks higher up on the ridge when you come to Y's. There are a couple places where I still couldn't find the trail and bush-whacked through some lines of spruce that crossed the ridge. None of these areas is more than 100ft long.
The Avalon Trail from Field to Avalon was also unbroken. I never found the trail and ended up just bushwhacking down a gully to the lower Avalon Trail nearly where the A-Z and Avalon trails meet. Do not follow this track as I do not vouch for its quality. It was after dark when I made it and it is pretty meandering.
